"But now that I was finally here, standing on the summit of Mount Everest, I just couldn't summon the energy to care."
-Jon Krakauer

Was the 1996 Everest disaster unique compared to other seasons on the world's tallest mountain?

According the Krakauer, one in four people who have attempted to climb Mount Everest have perished. While only fifteen people died during the 1996 spring season (a relatively normal casualty rate--in fact, Krakauer states that the number of deaths was actually below average on Everest in 1996), eight people died on May 11, 1996. During the next four weeks, only seven other people died. The fact that over fifty percent of a season's casualties occurred on one day and involved only two expeditions-- Rob Hall's Adventure Consultants and Scott Fischer's Mountain Madness-- raised serious questions about the commercialization of Everest and the associated safety risks (refer to "About the Book" tab).
